Jewellery producers are increasingly backing initiatives that tackle major social, political and environmental issues, particularly stemming from mining raw materials.

The ethical jewellery market is a relatively new sector, with main industry watchdogs being set up in the early 2000s. Gauging its overall size is difficult, although figures for individual standards organisations do hint at its growing scale. This growth is prompted not least by wider awareness of the substantial social, political and environmental problems in jewellery’s supply chain.
