The Chemical Free Alternative to Viscose

Finland has long created wealth from its forest industry. Now Finnish ‘cleantech’ start-up Spinnova is scaling up technology that turns wood fibre into recyclable fibre – without chemical processing or excessive water and energy inputs.

Spinnova’s revolutionary technology reportedly consumes 99 per cent less water than cotton production.

Unlike other cellulosics such as viscose, Spinnova’s method uses no harmful dissolution chemicals to reduce the wood fibre to a polymer level and regenerate the cellulosic filaments.

Given that the fashion industry currently uses over 8,000 synthetic chemicals, presenting both health and environmental hazards, this innovation is a welcome step forward in cleaning up the industry.
