Luxury jewellery’s supply chain is highly fragmented geographically. Precious metals and gems are extracted, processed and traded in multiple sites by millions of workers. Much of the industry is artisanal and poorly regulated.

Luxury jewellery – as opposed to fashion jewellery – is made from precious metals and gemstones that are extracted from geological deposits. Gold, silver, platinum, diamonds and other gems are processed and traded in a chain of activity that can span the world, much like garment production.
