Global Wool Production and Sustainable Standards

Although wool is produced in vast quantities, the amount used in apparel is small (1%) and decreasing. Sustainable wool sources are organically produced or abide by strict animal welfare criteria.

Wool is a natural, hard-wearing and long-lasting fibre produced by sheep all around the world and renowned for its thermal properties. Despite these attributes, its share of use in garment production is small and decreasing.

The wool industry produces around 1,160 million kilograms of clean wool per year from a global herd of over a billion sheep.1 Each sheep yields enough to produce 10 metres of fabric or about six jumpers (sweaters).  In total, there is enough wool grown each year to produceā€¦
