Women Center Network Exchange – How to Work with Unions

As explored throughout this Concept Note, unions representing women garment workers play a vital role in advocating for workers’ rights and improving labour conditions including better pay and benefits. 

Despite significant challenges and structural limitations, their efforts in each country have included negotiating better and safer working environments and benefits, addressing gender-specific issues, offering legal support, and supporting the enhanced collective bargaining power of women.

Where safe to do so, it makes strategic sense for Women’s Centers to be providing information about unions, as well as encouraging women workers to join and lead unions.
